I Need Your Love –John 15:12-17

This song was written after a bible study I went to one night in Boston. The teacher was sharing about God’s work of “pruning” in our lives. In order for a tree to be healthy and strong, a gardener must cut off some of the branches that are dead or not bearing fruit. If I’m going through a long season of pruning it’s easy to become weary and discouraged. But pruning is always for the benefit of making me a more fruitful person. What kind of fruit am I talking about? Galatians 5:22 says, “the fruit of the Spirit is love.” God prunes unhealthy aspects of our lives (sometimes with our cooperation and sometimes not) in order to decrease our self-love. How? Pruning helps me to see my need for God because temporary things are being stripped away (such as money, reputation, possessions, even relationships). When I see my need for God, I turn to Him because my usual comforts are not there to console me. When I turn to God, He restores me and fills me up with the right kind of love: His love. God’s love is pure and has no ulterior motives or self-interests. It is the “fruit” that I can now give away to others. Anything less than this is a rip off by comparison. As 1 Corinthians 13:3 (NLT) states: “If I gave everything I have to the poor and even sacrificed my body, I could boast about it; but if I didn’t love others, I would have gained nothing.”
